Students in lower income areas who surpass the third grade with the ability to read proficiently and with access to books to continue reading success are more likely to graduate high school, remain above the poverty line, and are less likely to be arrested and imprisoned.

Check out this video about the Summer Slide. It helps to explain the gaps that can occur each year, even without major setbacks like family trauma and events like Covid 19.
This is what Project Transformation is all about.
This program partners churches, college students, and children together to enrich the lives of lower income children and prevent the "summer slide" in reading. Bridging the gap helps ensure that all students have access to the tools that lead to success.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to sit and read WITH the students! You will be listening to students read to you and helping identify words or phrases they may not know. Basically, you are making a friend and showing these kids how much they are loved while encouraging a love for reading!
Won't You Join Us?
Help make a difference for the children in our community!
This is also a GREAT way for students to earn service hours! We will get their volunteer sheets signed by HUMC representatives on the day they read!
